Introduction

Mahbert High School, a premier Christian co-educational public instituition was established in the year 1967 by Late Mr. C. Mahbert, son of Mr. George Mahbert, Rai Shaib, MLA and first Chairman (Siliguri Municipality) and his wife Late Mrs A. Mahbert. The Oldest and first public English School in Siliguri.The name “Mahbert” is now synonymous with quality education and aims at providing academic and vocational training to children irrespective of their religious, social or cultural background.

Late Mr. C. Mahbert was a determined yet kind and sensitive man. A visionary who foresaw the need for a good school, and laid the basis for the present day establishment, which now imparts education to over fifteen hundred students. After his sad demise on the 2nd December 1974 (now commemorated as “Memorial Day”), the responsibility of furthering the ideals of Mr. C. Mahbert was taken up by Late Mrs. A. Mahbert and under her guidance the school achieved recognition by the Government of West Bengal.

The school (from KG – Class XII) is run and administered by a body known as the Mahbert Education Society. This body has been registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act. 1961 (Regd. No S/22631) The school is recognized by the Government of West Bengal under the code of Anglo Indian Education and follows the Inter-State Board of Anglo Indian Education, New Delhi, with the children appearing for their ICSE examination at the end of the class X and the ISC examination at the end of Class XII.

Location Infrastructure

With the all round growth of Siliguri, now the most important city in Eastern India, an acute need for a new spacious complex was felt. As a result, Mahbert High School now boasts of a new modern complex at Dagapur on the Siligur-Darjeeling Highway. Built to the latest standards, with the majestic Darjeeling Himalayas as its backdrop, the campus has a large and airy classrooms, a full sized football and cricket field and a basketball court. The gymnasium cum Study Hall too has been completed. The entire school from Pre-Nursery to XII has been accommodated in the new complex at Dagapur. Expansion plans include an auditorium and a swimming pool.

Assessment & Examination

The entire academic year is divided into Two Semesters with an examination for each semester. Pupils will be examined in all subjects. Besides these Term Examinations, performance of the pupils will be assessed through weekly tests and assignments.

For all classes 40% marks must be scored in every subject in order to pass. Where grading is used at least Grade ‘D’ must be scored, Grade ‘E’ means failure.

Curriculum

Subjects offered in English, Hindi / Bengali / Nepali, Mathematics, Science, History and Civics, Geography, Computer Applications, Economics and Commerce

 

ICSE (Class Pre Nursery to X):

 

The School accepts students who have passed ICSE or its equivalent, and prepares students for the Indian School Certificate Examinations of the Council in the following streams:

1.) Science Stream: comprises of English, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science.

2.) Commerce Stream: comprises of English, Accounts, Commerce, Mathematics, Economics, Business Studies and Computer Science.

3.) Arts Stream: comprises of English, Political Science, History and Civics, Geography and Sociology.

Optional subjects also include Hindi/ Bengali/ Nepali and Physical Education

While all lessons are imparted in English, children are required to take Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali and Nepali as their second and third languages.

Apart from studies, the school lays emphasis on the development of personality and character. This, it seeks to do with the firm belief that a child’s personality can only be developed when it is placed in an environment that encourages their participation in various sports, games and outdoor activities. The school also gives importance to the inculcation of Moral Science studies.

The school also ensures that the child’s talents are fully developed by allowing participation in extra-curricular activities and socially useful productive work and community service.

Some of the sports and extra-curricular activities include: Taekwondo and Dance classes, Inter House Tournaments in Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Cricket, Throw-ball, Badminton, Table Tennis and Kho kho, Inter Class Competition in Singing, Group dance, Plays, Debates, Drawing, Quiz, Fancy dress and Elocution also, Science Fair, Commerce Fest, Annual School concert, Excursions and study tours.

All students are required to avail of the school bus.

i) The bus will stop at feed stops only in case the student misses the bus, he/she is expected to reach school by other means.

ii) Parents/Guardians and students are expected to pay due respect to the driver and helper of the bus.

iii) Students are expected to obey the bus monitors and be well behaved in the bus as well as at the bus stands.

iv.) Parents/Guardians are not allowed to enter or travel by the school bus.

v.) The school cannot be held responsible for any untoward accident that may occur on the road.

vi.) Students should not be taken out of the bus by anyone except at the specified bus stop. Parent/ Guardians who want their ward not to return by bus, must inform the receptionist well in advance before the student boards the bus.
